Importance of Breakfast

We have often heard the Scottish proverb “Eat Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper.” Breakfast literally means Breaking the fast from the night before. Technically breakfast makes up for 1/4th of our daily meals and yet, we regard it to be the most important meal of the day. Why is this so?

After sleeping, your body requires some refuelling. Without which, you will feel tired and weary even after getting loads of rest. Breakfast gives your body the kick start it needs to function successfully all day long. Eating a healthy breakfast helps us feel more focused for the coming day, whether we are at work or simply getting on with our daily routines. Eating food in the morning not only fuels us until lunchtime but actually gives our brains the essential energy to function and focus better on tasks throughout the day. Those that are calorie-conscious, skipping out a meal will not help you lose weight, but in fact the opposite may happen instead. If you don’t eat breakfast, you’re way more likely to end up snacking throughout the morning, which could pile up the unhealthy calories!  That is why it is very important to nourish your body with a healthy breakfast first thing in the morning. One should never skip breakfasts.

Although the Breakfast trends now, have become unhealthy. Even the importance given to breakfasts is declining day by day. With an abundance in the availability of synthetic and processed foods. People are deceived and misled into thinking that these foods are healthy and nutritious. That is why what you choose to have for breakfast and how is crucial.

There are three key points to remember while choosing your breakfast-

Include Complex carbohydrates. The fiber content of various complex carbs will help keep you fuller for a longer period of time. For example Oatmeal or Whole grain cereal. The type of grain you choose is also important. Even the breakfast cereal available these days are sugar coated and processed. So, it is better to examine your cereal thoroughly before you choose to include it in the most important meal of your day. Avoid processed foods. As mentioned above, breakfasts have become unhealthy. Foods like Heavy butters and artificial syrups add the unnecessary calories. People have also started opting for processed breakfast bars. But, these have hidden sugars. Thus it is very important to read the labels and check all the contents carefully before choosing your breakfast.Opt for a lean protein source. On its own or when paired with a complex carb, protein can really help fill you up and satisfy hunger throughout the morning. Eggs are great to complement any breakfast meal. Free range eggs are a great alternative. Chickens allowed to roam freely on farms are able to get a varied diet.  Eggs from such sources are superior in their nutritional value. Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are essential for proper nourishment of your body. Opt for organic fruits and vegetables. They are nutritionally dense and will fill you up on fewer calories. You can also combine them with greek yogurt.
